Language only comprises 7% of communication. This must pale into insignificance when it comes to music and singing. The depth of communication inherent in spiritual music amongst those experiencing it together is immense. This is particularly so when you are part of the creation of the music. Mantra singing is especially interesting because the element of language is removed for most people. Singing Sanskrit Mantras provides a deep soul connection and a definite shift in consciousness. It is powerful and enlivening.

I am spending the weekend at the Omega Institute at Rhinebeck in upstate New York at the Ecstatic Chant weekend. The weekend is totally dedicated to Mantra singing and music and it is a deeply spiritual event. It’s now about 2 o’clock in the morning and the music will continue for over another 3 hours. We started at 9 o’clock this morning and have had an amazing variety of music throughout the day. The highlights have been the well known names of Krishna Das and Deval Premal. KD has, particularly, provided a backbone to the event with his amazing baritone voice and his easy flowing style. He flows from mantra to mantra, from rhythm to rhythm without flinching. A continuous set of 2 hours from him is an experience not to be missed.

There are powerful voices such as Shyamdas and Jai Uttal as well as the more modern Wah! and MC Yogi. It is interesting to hear Mantra singing crossed with Rap music, I’m not sure it totally worked for me. There are 500 people here singing, dancing and just listening, enjoying the spiritual connection, making new friends and just experiencing life.

This amazing blessing called music. We need to keep flowing with the music as it is right now, it keeps bringing us back to the present moment, to now. It brings us into a space where we are in the presence of and connected to the eternal. At this precise moment in time people are arriving and departing on this planet. The cycle of life and breathing continues while music reminds us to live, to be in the moment, to enjoy what we have and where we are. What else do we need.
