What is it about men? Why do they feel the need to expand beyond their size and shape. Why are they so self-centred that they cannoy see the discomfort they are causing? Why can it only be resolved by confrontation? On the flight to Dubai I had a severe case of elbow conflict. “I claim this armrest and ye shall not have any of it!”
I fly a lot in economy and have very little issue with lack of space. Legroom can somtimes be a problem, but usually we are all so co-operative that elbow room is rarely an issue. On this flight a smart looking gentleman about my own age came and sat in the seat beside me. I suppose we were about the same build. He immediately got his paper out and ‘claimed the armrest’. That in itself is not the real issue, it’s the elbow in the solar plexus that really gets to me. The elbow sticks over and jabs you in the side. You can’t get away, there is no room. The only way you can stop this is to squeeze your elbow in the way, creating an extremely uncomfortable and tight situation.
In this case the guy did not get the hint and kept’over-claiming’. Eventually I confronted him on it and he reacted as if he had not realised I was there. It eased during the flight but, of course, the legs were thrown wide apart in that over-aggressive male way. This continued to cause difficulties as I now had to squeeze my legs together to avoid him.
Why do men do this? Why do they feel the need to throw their legs apart and take up twice as much width as their body? Do they really think women will be impressed by it and fall over themselves to get between his legs! You must be joking!
